Prostate cancer is 100% treatable if detected early
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Typically prostate cancer grows slowly and is initially confined to the prostate gland, where it may not cause serious harm. While most types of prostate cancer grow slowly, needing minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and may spread to other organs quickly.
Why is it important to get tested every year?
Cancer that is detected early, while still confined to the prostate gland, has a better chance of a successful, less invasive, treatment. The examination itself is totally painless and takes only few minutes of your valuable time.
FirstMed's prostate cancer screening contains:
- A consultation with our urologist to discuss family and medical history.
- PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test. A blood sample is taken to measure the level of PSA, a protein made by the prostate, in the blood. Typically found in small quantities, evated levels may be an indicator of the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate disorders. PSA is not a unique indicator of prostate cancer, but may also detect prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) When necessary, the doctor will preform manual exam of the prostate, examining the prostate for any irregularities in size, shape, and texture.
The PSA test and DRE can be used to detect prostate cancer when no symptoms are present. They can help catch the disease at an early stage when treatment is more effective and potentially has fewer side effects
